Three ways to cover the calls nobody can pick up
| Voicemail | Live answering service | AI phone agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answers every call | No, records a message | Yes, if staffed | Yes |
| Knows your inventory | No | Usually not | Can, if connected to live inventory |
| Books the appointment | No | Sometimes, with calendar access | Can, on your calendar |
| Texts the caller a link to the car | No | Rarely | Can, during the call |
| Hand-off to your team | Someone listens later | Message passed on | Alert or transfer to a salesperson |
| Shows up in the CRM | Only if someone logs it | Depends on the service | On the customer record, if built in |
| Human judgment | None | Yes | Limited; should hand off |
Why missed calls matter
A phone call is often the most serious kind of lead: the shopper has found a car and wants to talk now. If nobody answers, the next dealer on their list usually will. What a missed call costs a used-car store works through the math with your own numbers, and After hours: who answers your phone at 9 PM? looks at the evening gap.
When each option makes sense
- Voicemail plus a missed-call text-back is a reasonable floor for a very small lot: the caller at least gets a text from your number right away.
- A live answering service fits stores whose callers mostly need a human touch and who are fine with a message taken for the morning.
- An AI phone agent fits stores that get inventory questions and appointment requests after hours or while the floor is busy, and want the call to end with a booked visit.
What to ask any phone AI vendor
- Does it answer from my live inventory, or from a script?
- Can it book on my calendar and text a confirmation with my address?
- How does it hand off to a person, and how fast is my salesperson alerted?
- Where do the call and its outcome show up: in my CRM on the customer record, or in a separate portal?
- How are minutes billed, and is there a cap? See the AI phone agents guide for consent and TCPA questions.
Where CarSales AI fits
A missed call from the lot phone gets an automatic text-back, or Lot Line, the CarSales AI phone agent, answers. Lot Line looks up the caller, searches your inventory, texts a link to the car while the caller is still on the line, gives a ballpark trade-in range, offers open times, books the appointment and texts a confirmation with your address, then alerts your salesperson. Lot Line runs on a connected GoHighLevel account we set up, and its minutes come from the plan's monthly usage allowance. Lot Line vs. voicemail shows the difference on a real call flow.
