The free options, and their trade-offs
| Free option | What you typically get | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial of paid software | The full product for a limited time | It ends. Check whether a card is required, what happens to your data afterwards and whether the trial includes texting and calls. |
| Free plan (freemium) | A limited version that stays free | Limits on users, vehicles, texts or features; support and integrations often sit on paid tiers. |
| General-purpose free CRM | Contacts, pipelines and email | No desking, VIN-based inventory, dealer forms or listing-site lead parsing; you build and maintain the setup. |
| Spreadsheets | Total control at no cost | No automatic follow-up, no texting with consent tracking, easy to overwrite, hard to share live with a team. |
| Downloadable desktop program | Software installed on one computer | Backups, updates, remote access and security are your job; check that it is still maintained and download only from the vendor's own site. |
Why there is usually nothing to download
Most current car sales software, dealership CRMs and a growing share of dealer management systems are cloud software: you sign in from a browser on a computer, tablet or phone. The vendor runs the servers, backups and updates. For a small lot that means no server in the back office and a salesperson can work a lead from the lot. When a search says "free download," the practical question is usually "can I try it without paying?", and a free trial answers that better than an installer.
The hidden costs of free
- Time. Setting up and maintaining a general-purpose tool or spreadsheet is hours each week that are not spent selling.
- Missed follow-up. Tools that do not follow up on their own depend on memory; see the 4-minute rule for speed to lead.
- Compliance. Texting customers needs consent records, opt-outs and quiet hours, and customer financial data has to be protected. See dealership data security and FTC compliance.
- Switching later. If you outgrow a free tool, moving your data is easier when you checked the export first. The migration guide shows what to bring.
Questions to ask before you pick a free tool
- What exactly is free, and what is the first thing I will have to pay for?
- How many users, vehicles and texts are included?
- Can I export every customer, lead, deal and car any time?
- Who handles backups and security, and where is customer data stored?
- Does it do the jobs I actually need: one lead inbox, follow-up, desking, inventory, the books? The car sales software guide lists them.
What CarSales AI offers instead of "free"
CarSales AI is not free, and we would rather say so up front. What it does offer:
- A 14-day free trial, no card, on every dealership plan. Point the setup wizard at your website and your branding and inventory load in about 10 minutes; see how it works.
- Free FMYCAR listings: every car with a price and a photo is listed on the FMYCAR marketplace at no extra cost, with leads to your CRM. See how free FMYCAR listings work.
- A live demo with no form: click around a working dealership account.
- Month-to-month after the trial, priced per store with unlimited users and every feature. Salespeople can sign up on their own for $49 a month after the same trial.
If you are comparing paid options on cost, our dealership software pricing research lists published prices with sources, and used car dealer software covers what a small lot needs.
